Another example today of Jesus coming in conflict with legalistic Pharisees. He is walking through some cornfields with His disciples, who are plucking ears of corn as they go along. In itself, there was nothing wrong with this; it was allowed. The problem, to the Pharisees, was that it was the Sabbath. And reaping and gleaning were not allowed on that day of rest. This is a pure example of legalism. Picking a few ears of corn could never be called 'reaping'. Jesus then gives an example, from the Scriptures the Pharisees claimed to follow. David and his soldiers went into the house of God and began eating the Loaves of Proposition, put there as an offering to God and began to eat them - because they were hungry. For Jesus, hunger, a real human need, took priority over a ritual. The same applied to his disciples and what they were doing. And Jesus further says that the Sabbath was made for people and not people for the Sabbath. And it is true of all human laws, they are to promote the wellbeing of individuals and society. They are not to be followed for their own sake, as the Pharisees believed. We need to remember that too.
Some laws can be immoral. Morality and conscience always take precedence over law.
The Son of Man is master even of the Sabbath.
