"Jesus summoned those whom He wanted." As Christians we can say that we are the apostles of Jesus, that means, the ones who are sent. Today's Gospel shows us the heart of our vocation.
The first very important truth is that our faith is not by pure chance or accident or by a decision of our parents. It was Jesus who summoned us into His Church because He wanted us to be with Him. It was God who was searching for us because He has loved us from the beginning of the world.
The second task given from Jesus to His apostles is to preach the Gospel. We don't have to search too far for places where we can proclaim the Gospel. The places where we live and work are proper for that. When we really are with Jesus, when we really know Jesus, we should share with others the good news about our Lord and Savior.
And the third task of Jesus' apostles is to have authority to drive out demons. It is true that only priests and bishops have the authority to perform exorcism but with the power of love, forgiveness and acceptance each one of us can cast out the demons of hatred, prejudice, anger and jealousy.
Jesus called us to himself like the twelve Apostles without our merit. Today let us pray that we may never betray Jesus' love, but follow Him faithfully even under the foot of His cross.
"Let us see, O Lord, Your mercy and give us Your saving help."
