The theme of not being afraid runs through the Readings for today. Jacob's sons were afraid their brother Joseph would take revenge on them for their past ill-treatment of him, but the magnanimity of Joseph is revealed in his telling them they had nothing to fear from him. Joseph's awareness of the role of God in his and his family's lives is also seen in his reminding them that it was not for him to judge them, but that God had already decided for them and that it was obviously part of God's plan of salvation that he, Joseph, should work for their good, to keep the family alive to claim the promised land for God's chosen people. There was a larger picture to be considered, and, as part of that picture, they need not be afraid.
In the Reading from Matthew's Gospel, a bigger picture was also at stake, and the disciples were also told not to be afraid. The mission of the Apostles was to spread the good news of Christ's message, and the missionary was to be judged only on his faithfulness to this duty. A loving and fatherly God who knows and cares for all His creatures should provide courage for those facing hostile human judgement. Jesus Himself would be their advocate when they are judged by the Heavenly Father, so fear should not come into the picture at all.
Lord, may our trust in You as a loving Father destroy all our fears. Amen.
