"There are none so blind as those who will not see." A statement that could be applied perfectly to the Pharisees and Scribes. In today's Gospel they come up to Jesus asking for a sign to prove his credentials and his real identity. This is ironic because just before this we were told of Jesus healing a man with a withered hand in the synagogue. But the only thing the Pharisees could "see" was that it was done on a Sabbath day, when no 'medical' work of that kind should be done. Rather than admit to the presence of God in what is happening before their eyes, the Pharisees accuse Jesus of healing by the power of Satan. Not surprisingly, Jesus refuses to give them the sign they demand. They have seen more than enough signs to come to the right conclusion about Jesus. But they are like a rotten tree which can only produce rotten fruit. The ordinary people on the other hand are blown over by what they see. "Can this be the son of David?" (Mt. 12:23) they ask. In other words, is he the long-awaited Messiah? So, on the day of Judgement, the sinful people of Niniveh, who did penance for their sins after the preaching of Jonah, and the Queen of Sheba, who came from so far to imbibe the wisdom of Solomon, will rise in glory and condemn those who refused to see the presence of God in Jesus. What about us? Are we able to recognise the presence of Jesus in the people with whom we come in contact every day?
Lord, that I may see!
