"In today's Gospel Jesus explained to the Apostles that He was teaching people in parables "because knowledge of the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven had been granted to the Apostles, but to many others it has not been granted." When we listen to these words we probably wonder why God doesn't give the gift of faith, the gift of understanding the mysteries of His kingdom to everyone. Does God divide people between worthy and unworthy, between better and worse?
Indeed, there are people that didn't receive the gift of faith and understanding because their hearts are locked to God's grace through ill will. Usually these people consider themselves open-minded and free-thinkers. However, their mind is open but not to God and His commandments, and their freedom of thinking means to wander and doubt but not to search for truth. It is not God who isn't generous with giving; it is the proud and prejudiced human heart that isn't able to receive God's gifts.
"Gross is the heart of this people, lest they understand with their hearts and be converted and I heal them" - God said to the Israelites through the prophet Isaiah. There is only one thing that can open a closed and confused mind and it is a broken heart and a humble spirit. God can only reveal the mysteries of His kingdom to a humble and trusting person who acknowledges a need for God and His truth.
"O Holy Spirit, may we never close our eyes, ears and hearts to God and His mysteries. Amen.
