We generally think of Paul as a theologian of genius. Today's reading shows him to be a practical man who knows that the Christian does not live on theology alone. We see him set about the task of providing money for the needy Jerusalem Church. While he adroitly plays on friendly community rivalry, he offers a deeper motive for generosity. He points out that those who have received so much from Christ should be generous towards the more unfortunate. We should take this point. We, who have experienced the divine generosity, ought not be selfish.

Jesus enlarges the Jewish concept of 'neighbour' to apply to all without distinction of race. He is not taking a sentimental and na?ve view; he maintains the category of 'enemy'. If he demands love of enemies it is because the Father loves all. Unless they can display this all-embracing love, Christians are no better than others; they have not really experienced the love of their Father. These demands are vivid and even startling illustions of the manner in which the quality and direction of God's treatment of His children might be reproduced in human relationships. Jesus was aware of how much He asked of human nature when He added on 'love your enemies' to 'love your neighbour'.
