Hagar is the first person in the Book of Genesis to encounter the angel of God. She is in a desperate situation-expecting a child and yet cast out into the wilderness. Although she is only a maidservant, and although she has behaved haughtily towards her mistress, God has mercy on her and treats her with respect. The Lord calls her by name, converses with her, and makes promises to her. Her perspective on life changes dramatically because of this intimate encounter with God. Hagar receives a future. As a result, she is inspired with hope and musters the courage to return to Abram and Sarai. When Hagar's son is finally born, he is named Ishmael, 'God hears'.

In the Hebrew Scriptures the Lord blesses Abraham and Sarah in a special way. Within this story of blessing, God's kindness to Hagar is a wonderful witness to the fact that the Lord's kindness is not limited to a certain few. God hears the cry of those in need.

Lord, hear me as You heard Hagar. May my relationship with You inspire me with courage, perspective, and deeper faith in You.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That International attention towards the poorer countries may give rise to more concrete help, in particular to relieve them of the crushing burden of foreign debt.
