External things and religious rituals are easier to accomplish when one's life is comfortable. It was harder for the Scribes and Pharisees from their position in the high places of honour in society to "search for justice, help the oppressed, be just to the orphan, and to plead for the widow." But it is this that the Lord wants rather than ritualistic keeping of the law, especially religious laws which had been multiplied elaborately, much to the discomfort and suffering of the common people. Such imposition of priestly regulations, mainly affecting the common folks contrasts strongly with the 'easy yoke and the light burden' of Jesus. (Mt. 11:28-30). The display of honorific titles and overbearing attitudes of the religious authorities, such as the Scribes and Pharisees was against the Christian ideal of leadership as service to the community (20:25-28). Jesus says of Himself, "I have come to serve and not to be served." Thus Jesus contrasts the dynamics of humility and self-exaltation. However we are warned that the bad example of the Religious Leaders does not discredit the Word of God. Nor does it lessen the principle of authority.
Give us Lord a new heart and a new spirit to listen to the voice of the needy and oppressed even in our own home.
