Jesus had warned His disciples against false prophets who would proclaim the end of the world and the coming of the Messiah. Paul's Letter to the Thessalonians is a good reminder how long it takes for the Gospel message to take root in our hearts and to free us from all unnecessary speculation of false doctrines. Paul feels obliged to remind the Thessalonians, and us as well, that there is no need to speculate about "specific times and moments"; in fact such speculation is more than useless - it is dangerous because it distracts us from the liberating truth which Jesus brought us. If we accept the saving truth of the Gospel, we will know that "we are not in the dark" for in Jesus Christ, God has given us the grace of salvation, and that is sufficient.
This Letter of Paul was written long ago and in circumstances so very different from those of the world in which we live. Yet it is the word of God and it must help us to "console and upbuild each other" so that we continually grow in faith, in hope and in love.
Lord Jesus, in union with the Father, you sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to guide us in the truth. Grant that we may hold firmly to the truth that sets us free.
