"Seeing the sins of men, one sometimes wonders whether one should react to them by force or by humble love. If humble love is carried through, the whole world can be conquered" (Dostoievsky).
Yes, we are sinners. We fall short of God's glory, yet God saved us through His only begotten Son. It was Jesus' compassion and love that brought salvation to the world. St Paul believed that he was the living example of the Gospel message of God's merciful love and understanding and forgiveness. By God's grace it was revealed to him that Jesus came into the world to save sinners. If God could forgive him, God could forgive everyone.
The call of true discipleship in acknowledging Jesus as Lord, comes with a commitment of obedience. In following the example of Jesus, we are called to put His Words and deeds into practice. It is only when we take Jesus Christ seriously and make His Words the foundation of our lives that we learn love, compassion and understanding. We need to be, therefore, as forgiving as God has been forgiving-to love one another as God loves us.
Help me, O Lord, to respond with compassion towards those who hurt me. To forgive them as You forgive me. To love them as You love me. Amen.
