"God dwells in inapproachable light." Paul thus highlights two aspects of the great mystery of God. First of all, God dwells in light. St John refines this doctrine by saying that "God is light." Secondly, that light is "inapproachable", reminding us how different God is from us, his children.
While Paul's words invite us to worship God who is such a mystery for us, there are other aspects of the mystery which we must recall from other passages of Scripture so that we can rejoice in an even greater truth. God,who dwells in inapproachable light, has approached us in Jesus Christ, so that we can come to the light. Jesus declared himself "the light of the world". There is even more. Jesus invited us to become children of the light and to become a light for the world.
We cannot keep the whole truth of Scripture in mind all the time. We are, however, blessed by the daily reading of Scripture at Mass, for this continuous reading continuously draws us into the light and the truth which Jesus revealed. Through the word of God we are each day a little more transformed into children of the light.
Lord Jesus, you promised that we could become children of the light. Draw us into deeper union with you, the Light of the world.
