Today we have the second prediction of his Passion which Jesus gives to his disciples. He will be handed over to people who will put him to death and, three days later, he will rise. But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask. Then, later in the day, Jesus asked them what they had been talking about 'on the way'. They would not answer because they had been discussing which of them was the Number One in the group. And, very likely, that was because, if Jesus was really going to die, they had to decided who would take over their group. They were too embarrassed to say this to Jesus. But, of course, he knew. He then took a small, powerless child as an example and told them that unless they were prepared to put themselves totally at the service of their companions they would never be in the first place. To be the first in Jesus' world is not to have control over other people but to be totally dedicated to the wellbeing of brothers and sisters. That is true leadership and true authority. And it is a kind of leadership that everyone one of us can exercise, irrespective of our 'official' role in society.
If anyone wishes to rank first, he must remain the servant of all.
