During the life of the early Church there were times when it was 'left in peace', but yet the work of proclaiming the Good News continued. Our belief in God is not simply something we call up when things go wrong, or when we find ourselves in great difficulty. God is also with us in the good events of life, sharing our joy. Thus we are confident that He is always with us, loving us, as we journey through life. Let us not be slow to call upon Him in our times of difficulties and praise Him in time of happiness.

We can learn what it means to believe from the faith of St Peter expressed in the Gospel, in this 'simple' phrase, "we believe". Of course Peter and the other apostles must have wondered at the meaning of Jesus' words. They, like the crowd, must have wondered how Jesus could give His flesh as food and His blood as drink. But yet Peter, speaking for the apostles, can still say, "we believe". Our act of faith does not stop us from attempting a fuller knowledge of our faith, as we continue to give it our assent. We assent to the truths of the faith even while we journey to a fuller understanding of them.
