In John's proclamation of story of Jesus, he places particular emphasis on who Jesus is and what this means for us. Jesus is not a myth, a symbol, or even a great teacher. He is life itself - life which has come to dwell among us and which can be seen, heard and touched. When Peter and the beloved disciple look into the empty tomb, they see that the wrappings are cast off and the cloth which covered His face has been deliberately folded and set aside. Jesus has not vanished like a spirit; He has vanquished death.
Jesus is more than a mere principle by which we live. He is a living and tangible presence. God is not distant - we dare to believe that divinity has been joined to humanity and that God walks alongside each and every one of us. John rejoiced that we now have a deeply personal relationship with the Father and with Jesus. Whenever we struggle with problems, loneliness, decision, tragedies, and so forth, we remember that we are not alone. We listen, we see the presence of Jesus in so many ways. Our hearts are touched by His presence, and we are consoled and encouraged by His personal friendship. He is real. He is here. And let us share that knowledge and joy with others.
Lord, deepen my personal relationship with You and the Father, and help me to share the joy with others.
