"Give them something to eat yourselves." Sharing our bread with others.

Bread is an amazing food. It is simple but we cannot imagine our meals without it. It is ordinary but it is always tasty. Every loaf of bread is baked from many grains of wheat that were gathered and ground together. Single loaf of bread can be shared among many people as a sign of love, generosity and hospitality. It is bread that sustains our daily life on earth. It is also bread that becomes Jesus' Body during the Holy Mass to nourish us for eternal life. We can easily say that bread symbolizes our life and love.

It was very meaningful that Jesus asked for bread when His Apostles had told Him about their limited resources and inability to feed thousands of hungry people. Jesus wanted to teach us this way that He will supply our needs as much as we are willing to share our life and our love with others. It is love that makes us generous not money.

St John reminds us today that true love is always sacrificial. It gives totally without counting the cost. We can learn this love from God because He first loved us and gave His Son as a sacrificial victim for our sins. It is meditation upon the mystery of Jesus' incarnation, cross and resurrection that makes our love of God and neighbour stronger.
