The parable of the Prodigal Son portrays the image of God as a loving Father who offers unconditional love and unlimited forgiveness towards sinners who return to His love. This parable intends to answer the criticism of the Pharisees and the scribes against Jesus (Lk.15:1-3). Here, the older son's attitude represents this group of people who criticize both the lavish and prodigal love of the father and the sinful younger son. By associating himself with sinners, Jesus proclaimed the mercy of God that accompanies the joy of the return of the lost against those who were self-righteous and angry over the joy of others.

Who do we resemble in this parable? Are we barriers/obstacles to reconciliation or do we live the Spirit of Jesus in forgiveness and compassion? So, God's liberating love is what we share with others especially those whom society rejects, alienates and marginalizes.

This God of mercy and compassion is also reflected in the first reading of Prophet Micah particularly in verse 18: "What God can compare with you: taking fault away, pardoning crime, not cherishing anger for ever but delighting in showing mercy?" What else can we expect from this merciful and compassionate God who constantly challenges us to be His true witnesses in this important area of our lives?

Lord, grant us the grace to be like You in Your mercy and forgiveness towards those who hurt us deeply.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
