After Jesus has finished preaching to the crowds from boat, He tells Peter to go into deeper water and let down his nets. Peter is reluctant because, as an experienced fisherman, he knows there are no fish there but, to please his Master, he reluctantly does so. He is then completely overwhelmed by the immensity of the catch which requires the help of his companions. He knows he is in the presence of Someone very special. "Go away from me, Lord, I am a sinful person!" Peter did not belong there; the expert realises he is nothing in the presence of this Man. Instead, he becomes so aware of his shortcomings. Paradoxically, it is the saints who are most ready to acknowledge their sinfulness. Jesus then reassures Simon and his companions: "Do not be afraid." These words they will hear many times again. Because he is calling them to be his partners in the work of building his Kingdom. The huge catch of fish made by the boat in which Jesus and Peter were is a sign of a much greater catch of people to be made by the new community led by the Spirit of Jesus and under the leadership of Peter. There are still many fish to be brought into the net, the Community in Christ, and it is up to each one of us to cooperate actively in this mission.
Go away, Lord, for I am a sinful person!
