The Hebrew people have survived the long journey through the desert and have now arrived at the margins of the Promised Land. However, they discover that the land is already inhabited. Those sent out to survey the situation report back that the inhabitants are a race of giants and there is no hope of ever moving them. The people lament. They choose to be discouraged by this report rather than trust in God's promise to provide for them.

The Canaanite woman who comes to Jesus in the Gospel is also in crisis. It is socially inappropriate for her to approach and seek help from a Jewish man. Yet, she comes to Jesus because she is desperate to get help for her daughter.

Jesus' words about the children and the dogs implies that the Canaanite woman is beyond the margins of his mission. Yet the woman does not give up. She actually accepts Jesus' portrayal of her situation. She does not ask for a place at the table. She has faith that even a fallen crumb of the Lord's grace is enough. Jesus sees her faith; her daughter is healed immediately.

What in life am I desperate to attain? Do I have faith that God will provide for me? Is a crumb of Christ's grace enough for me?

Lord, give me the courage to trust in Your promise.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
