What gifts do I have? Can the gifts I have been given by Christ really make a difference in this world? Today's Gospel touches on just this question.
A lamp is not meant to be hidden under a basket or kept to oneself - it is to be shared. This lamp is a symbol of the light of Christ, the good news. How has Christ made me aware of his presence, his life and his love in my life? Am I called to share this with others in some way?
St Angela Merici was born in a small town in Italy. While still young, she and her sister became orphans. As she grew up, Angela felt a call to help young girls. She did not have many resources, however, so she converted her house into a school for girls. Christ's light shone through her humble beginnings. In time, she started the order of Ursuline nuns, and eventually, her charism of teaching young girls spread throughout the world.
Does it matter if the gifts we have seem small? Does it matter if the people we serve or share God's love with are only a few? The good news of Christ's love is like a light, sooner or later its goodness shines forth.
Lord, help me not to keep your work in my life hidden. May Your light shine through me to touch others.
