When Moses received the mission from God to lead Israel out of Egypt, his response was one that we might expect from any ordinary human being: he wondered about the possibility. His question did not necessarily express doubt about the task given him. His question was, rather, an exercise in practical wisdom. Faced with any enormous task or problem in life, it is surely most prudent to reflect on how one is to face it, given the very obvious limitations of wisdom and strength which all of us experience. In such a situation, we must turn to God in prayer, whatever form our prayer may take. Moses' question was a prayer for guidance: "Who am I?" In later theological reflection we come to realize more clearly that God gives the grace we need to respond to every vocation and mission. The grace that Moses received at the burning bush was simple but clear: "I will be with you." At several points in their history, Israel would again hear these same words, until they received their fullest expression in Jesus, Emmanuel. Since God is with us, we have nothing to fear in responding to God's call.
Father in Heaven, count us as mere children so that our lives may truly be guided by the truth of the Kingdom of Heaven.
