Paul used an altar to an unknown God in his attempt to reach the Athenian philosophers. He was there to reveal to them the God whom no one really knew. It didn't make much of an impression - especially the part about the resurrection and final judgment. In a way, God is still unknown to many - even Christians - for they think of God as some distant being with little interest in human affairs. But our God is concerned personally with the life of every human being and does communicate with us when given a chance.
Elsewhere John insists that knowing God is itself eternal life and it is this personal knowledge of God that Jesus offers us through the spirit. Jesus assures his followers that even though he will no longer be physically present his spirit will dwell in the community and within the heart of every believer who abides in him. This spirit will continue to teach, reveal, and guide. It is not under the control of any particular person but is a gift to all. Not only that - this spirit will share with us all that has been given to Jesus. What an incredible promise! But abiding with Jesus means more than obeying the rules or being a 'good' person - it means abiding in love continually and in every aspect of our lives. Indeed, we are not alone and we are never without the presence of Jesus.
Lord, may we live in Your presence always.

Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
