These days it is common for people to seek help from counsellors, financial planners, life coaches, personal trainers and so on. They are willing to spend money to hire others to teach and guide them on how to use their wealth, how to stay mentally and physically healthy, how to look attractive, how to succeed and even how to have a good marriage.
Yet, how many of us are willing to make the effort or are open enough to seek assistance or guidance to grow in our faith? How many of us, especially those who are parents and godparents, are making the effort to teach and guide our children and young people in their spiritual life?
The scripture readings today remind us of the importance of spiritual mentoring. In the first reading, we learn how Priscilla and Aquila were willing to take an interest in Apollo and to further instruct him in the Way of the Lord. In the Gospel, we see Jesus, teaching his disciples, on the importance of praying to God in Jesus' name.
Perhaps, God is asking us to take a serious look at our role as spiritual mentors, particularly to the young. Are we doing our part? Or are we leaving the entire task to the priests, religious and the catechists? If it's the latter, then isn't it time for us to stand up and take responsibility!
Lord, help me to help others grow in their faith.
