Both Jesus and Paul spoke to the disciples and elders of Ephesus with such intensity and love. It was a time of bidding 'good-bye' and leaving behind words of care and concern as well as the teaching which ought to be passed on to the future generations.
Today as we reflect and meditate on Jesus' farewell discourse, we know this is also meant for us, His followers. Jesus' prayer reflects the unity of Father and Son and His complete dedication to His mission. Similarly we are called to share the same union in the Holy Trinity and continue His mission on earth.
This mission is reflected in Paul's farewell message. As he announced both the end of his mission and the onset of his trials and imprisonment, he reminded us of the two important dimensions of Christian living i.e. mission and passion. As we commit ourselves to be Jesus' followers, we know that we are to be His witnesses in the world and to accept the challenges and struggles that we may have to accept and embrace as part of the Paschal Mystery we are to live.
Today we are challenged to stand up for the truth particularly in a country where Christians are the minority. Are we ready to take up this challenge or remain complacent and think that it is only the responsibility of those in authority. Do our lives show that we are an Easter people with faith and hope?
"Lord grant us the courage and strength to stand up for the Truth."
