Does God hear me when I pray? This is not an easy question. In fact, at different times in our lives, we may answer it differently.
Today's reading from Genesis illustrates quite clearly that God hears Abraham's voice. Abraham is concerned for people in the city of Sodom who may be harmed unjustly. In light of this, Abraham is not afraid to respectfully question God about the situation. In response, God does not chastise Abraham for his many questions, but rather, listens and engages Abraham in dialogue.
Dialogue is a dance between expressing and listening. It is grounded in openness to the other.
We are Abraham's descendants in the faith. Have I ever disagreed with God about what is fair or just? Have I taken the time to honestly express my feelings or questions to God about this situation? Is it possible to engage in dialogue with God about this?
Lord, bless me with courage to speak to You from the heart. Bless me with courage to listen.
