During Lent we learn to look at ourselves and our need for redemption. As a result of this grace of reflection upon ourselves, we also learn a few other things. We learn to acknowledge and confess our sins, our faults and failings, but to do so with faith and without hating ourselves. As Catholics we value the sacrament of confession, as it is a great affirmation that God does not condemn us.

From reflecting on ourselves, we also learn not to judge others; we learn not to blame or criticize anyone else for our own shortcomings. Jesus sums all this up in his consoling instruction: "Be compassionate, as your Father is compassionate." God's compassion for us enables us to be compassionate to others, but equally be compassionate to ourselves. Compassion is not blindness to our own sinfulness or that of others. Compassion does not condone sin as if it were not important. Compassion does not mean looking to excuse oneself for wrong-doing or sin. Compassion is an attitude of faith which sees this sinful world with its sinful people within the context of God's eternal and merciful love. Compassion for ourselves and for others leads to repentance and opens our hearts to God's forgiveness

Lord, do not deal with us as our sins deserve but have mercy on us and redeem us.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
