Abraham lived before the revelation at Sinai and the giving of the Law. In effect, there was no Jewish religion yet - no set of beliefs or rules to live by. But when he heard the calling of God he listened - and he both believed and trusted God. He left behind everything and set out on an unknown journey guided only by God. It was because of this trust - this belief that God can be trusted - that he is called our father in faith. The openness to God's voice indicates whether one belongs to the household of God and not race, ethnicity, gender, social class, or even religious label. Ironically, even some very 'religious' people often are lacking in this trust or belief. The minute they face difficulties their 'faith' collapses. One's faith is not defined by what we believe but in whom we believe - and for us that means God the Father and His Son Jesus.
The Spirit of God dwells in us. It gives us courage and strength; it guides us in our speech and conduct. It will stand behind us when we are called to suffer or witness to our faith. We need not fear. The so-called sin against the Spirit is running away from it even when we know it is there and refusing to listen or to stand up for what is right. In other words, cowardice and selfishness. But when we listen to the spirit within us we will never lack for what we need in dealing with life.
Lord, deepen my faith and trust.
