To be a Christian is never to be alone! Yes, in reflecting on the passage in the letter to the Ephesians today, we are reminded of this important truth.
Just as Jesus chose and called the apostles, he has also chosen and called us to be part of his community, the Church. It means that we belong to a community of believers. Regardless of our ethnicity, cultural, social and economic backgrounds, we are part of the Body of Christ, with Christ as the Head.
It also means that we share in the one common faith that has been handed down to us from the time of the apostles. It is a faith we share not just with those who are living, but also with those who have died and gone before us, and with those who will come after us. With this, we form a vital link with the past and future generations who are believers of a long and unbroken faith that began more than two thousand years ago.
And let us not forget that we have Mother Mary, the saints and angels in heaven praying and interceding for us, just as we pray for the souls of those in purgatory.
Think about it! This is the Church you and I belong to. There are no strangers or foreigners in such a Church. To belong to it is to be reminded that we are not alone.
Lord, thank You for the gift of community.
