Most of us have heard the well-know verse from Acts 20:35 where Paul says that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Yet, for this to be true, much depends also on how and why we give. It's possible, for example, to give only to show off or to gain a tax rebate or to manipulate someone into doing something for us in return. Is this the kind of giving that attracts God's blessing? Not if Jesus' words in today's gospel are anything to go by. For Him the giving that is blessed is that which has no hidden agendas that which expects no repayment. And the first reading deepens our reflection by indicating to us the kind of outlook that can lead to such unselfish giving. It reminds us that everything that we have and are is not really our own but rather the generous gift of God to us. What difference would such a realization have on the way in which we live our lives today?
Lord, help me to be a generous giver knowing that all things that we have, have been Your gift.
