Mary's Birth is celebrated today for she was the bearer of the Messiah, the Christ Child. We praise God for having chosen her to be the mother of His Son.
In 431 A.D., Cyril of Alexandria, one of the leaders of the Council of Ephesus, helped to define the relationship between divinity and humanity in Jesus Christ. One of the results of this was that the Blessed Virgin Mary was given the title of "Mother of God" Theotokos rather than just "Mother of Jesus", because of the two natures, human and divine in Jesus, her Son.
When Mary was born to Anne and Joachim, would she have imagined becoming "Mother of God?" Yet she did become so, for her birth, her coming into the world, was an event of incredible importance. It was an event heralded by many a prophet of old.
Micah was one of them. At a time when human conduct was so evil, Micah wrote in despair and gloom, prophesying God's inevitable punishment of Jerusalem and its people. However, he offered hope, this hope of a Messianic ruler from the house of David who would bring peace based on covenant love. He would be born of a maiden, the maiden referred to by Isaiah (7:14) as the one who bring forth a son called 'Immanuel' i.e 'God with us'. Micah's hope lay in this same maiden, Mary, the mother of the Messiah and therefore the mother of God.
Lord, we thank You for giving us the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Mother of Your Son and our Mother too. Amen
