How would you describe your own identity? Today we hear from a person who sees himself as a servant of God. He has toiled much, however, his labour seems to be in vain. It looks like he has failed.
Somehow he is able to have hope - and even more strangely - confidence. He truly believes that God called him even before he was born. As a result, God will provide him with the strength he needs to complete his mission. This servant believes that, in the end, the mission's failure or success is not up to him, but up to God.
At the last supper, Jesus already knows that Judas will betray him. He does not, however, try to stop Judas or even convince Judas to change his mind. On the contrary, before Judas leaves we see that Jesus washes the disciples' feet¡Kand that means Judas' feet as well.
As difficult as it is, Jesus remains a faithful servant. He does not try to protect himself, to avoid danger or to stop loving others. Though Jesus sees betrayal and suffering coming, he chooses to trust in the Father. It is this relationship with the Father - amidst the struggles of life - that sustains Jesus. Though many will see Jesus' death as a failure, Jesus chooses to trust that the Father's plan will succeed.
Lord, amidst the questions and struggles of this life, help me to trust deeply in Your love for me.
