A person found an eagle's egg and put it in a nest of a barnyard hen. The eagle hatched and grew up with the brood of chicks. All his life, the eagle did what the barnyard chicks did. He scratched for worms and insects, clucked and cackled, would thrash his wings and fly a few feet in the air. Years passed and the eagle grew old. One day he saw a magnificent bird flying in graceful majesty among powerful wind currents, with scarcely a beat of its strong wings. The old eagle looked up in awe. "Who's that?" he asked. "That's the eagle, the king of the birds," said a hen. "He belongs to the sky. We belong to the earth - we're chickens." So the eagle lived and died a chicken, for that's what he thought he was.

In today's gospel Peter, James, and John get a glimpse of the divinity of Jesus, get a glimpse of what Jesus must look like now as he intercedes for us at the Father's right hand. These three also witnessed Jesus' humanity on another mount - the Mount of Olives - when in agony he prayed that if it was possible the cup might pass by him. Jesus became human so that we might become divine. Peter, James, and John got a glimpse of our future destiny. One day we will share fully in Christ's resurrection and be transfigured into glorified bodies with Christ. Until that day we must remember to live like the eagles we are!
