Some priests bought a house in La Jolla, Canada, to be their rectory. It had been built on a hillside and had a wonderful view. However, when the lot was graded the ground was not properly prepared before the foundation was poured and over time part of the ground slowly began to settle and move slightly down the hill and the foundation developed a big crack in the middle of the floor. Half the house was build on solid ground and half was sliding down the hill. You'd think priests would have known better! They noticed the crack before the structure of the house was too badly damaged and so rather than tear down the whole house and begin from scratch, they separated the house from the foundation, jacked the whole house up a few feet, stabilized the ground, poured a new foundation and then lowered the house down onto the new foundation.
We don't have to wait for collapse and total ruin before we rebuild on a firm foundation. We may not even have to do any major remodelling of our lives to be put on a new, solid foundation. What we do need to do is admit our need for God and build our lives on the firm foundation of Christ Jesus. With God's grace may we truly examine our lives, making a searching and fearless inventory of flaws and weaknesses and making any necessary changes or revisions so we may obey God's commandments out of love and be justified by our faith.
Lord free us from our sins, flaws and bring us to life.
