Jesus does not adhere to the norm of those days that "the Israelites have the first priority to receive the Good News", but pities the Canaanite, pagan woman. In this act of expelling the demon and healing the woman's daughter, He illustrates that His birth and ministry are meant to save all people, regardless of race, sect, or location. The importance is the quality of the faith of the individuals. What great news is this? The faith of a pagan woman can persuade the Lord? He intervenes and diverts the rule of preference.
At the same time, what a tremendous challenge it is to have single-hearted and steady-minded trust in the Lord! Even the wise King Solomon wavered from his part of the agreement with the Lord who twice appeared to him. In his old age, he worshipped pagan idols. Although Solomon's betrayal angered the Lord: "I will deprive you of the kingdom and give it to your servant," the generosity and the steadfastness of the Lord prevailed: "I will leave your son one tribe ¡K"
How faithful, forgiving and compassionate are God's actions! How unpredictable and mysterious are they! Let us contemplate on what the Lord has done in our lives. In what way is God continuing to labour for us?
Your Words, Lord, are spirit and life; help our unbelief! Listen to our plea and heal us!
