Thomas did not accompany Jesus in his passion. Like most of Jesus' other followers, he abandoned Jesus. Now, Thomas questions whether or not Jesus is truly alive. He has doubts.
When Jesus appears, he does not get angry at Thomas. Instead, Jesus simply offers Thomas what he needs to believe. If he must see and touch the wounds, then here they are. We do not know if Thomas actually touched the wounds. We do know that Thomas was moved to declare, "My Lord and my God."
In the entire Gospel of John, this is the most profound statement by one of Jesus' followers about the identity of Jesus. Thomas now recognizes Jesus as alive, divine and, more personally, as his Lord.
Interestingly, Thomas arrives at this discovery through his doubts. Jesus meets him there in the middle of his questioning. This changed Thomas. It is believed that Thomas eventually travelled great distances as a witness to Christ - even to India.
Is there anything I doubt about Jesus or the faith? What do I do with these questions?
Christ invites us to let these questions lead us to explore and discover the truth. If we have the courage and desire to seek what is true, we may be surprised. We may come to recognize Jesus in a more real and personal way.
Lord, help me to see You as You truly are.
