In today's Gospel reading we wonder at Jesus' response after being told that His mother and His brothers were outside wanting to speak to Him. In some way His response seems disrespectful of His mother and somewhat of a reproach. But on reflecting deeper on this short passage I think Jesus is teaching us a very important lesson. Doing the will of the Father identifies us with his mother, brother and sister. It brings us into close relationship with Jesus.

Mary's first "Fiat" her "yes" to God, is loved out each day as she remains close to her Son and realizes more deeply His mission. When Jesus was twelve years old He already pointed out to her that He must be about His Father's business. This is what His mission is all about. "I have come to do Your will." Mary pondered all these things in her heart.

In this passage Jesus is speaking to the crowd and Mary is a perfect example to put before them. Doing the will of the Father is an authentic sign of membership of His family. This is the invitation to all of us - to strive each day to listen to Jesus and to do His will.
