In today's Gospel, the Jews in Jerusalem are showing their impatience and anxiety by complaining to Jesus: "How much longer are you going to keep us in suspense?" They express eagerness to know who Jesus is - is He the Christ? Jesus seems to show His helplessness, directly, He replies: "I have told you, but you do not believe." He did not stop here, however. Instead He invites them to listen to His voice, know Him, and follow Him as sheep. He desires to be the witness for His Father as their Good Shepherd. He yearns to give them eternal life. He confirms that the Father and Him are one.
Isn't this the great news that when we honestly express our doubts, feelings and questions. The Lord shares His, and also tells us who He is, and what His relationship with the Father is. Patiently and gently, He teaches us with parables. Firmly and convincingly, He assures us that we will never be lost if we believe. Such message indeed finds its authenticity in Barnabas and the other disciples in the Acts. They are filled with Holy Spirit and faith as they evangelize. The Lord helps them personally, and showers them with grace. Their witnessing results in their own maturity and others' growth to be become true "Christians."
Jesus our Good Shepherd, grant us grace to listen to Your voice, know who You are, and follow You!
