Since the angels are God's messenger, the core of our belief about Guardian Angels is our belief in God's providential love for each one of us. God created us out of love and out of love guards us in all our ways. Scripture tells us in several places that God's love is a jealous love, a highly protecting and caring love.
Today's passage from Exodus is perhaps the most important Old Testament passage speaking about a Guardian Angel, even though the precise term is not used. Speaking with Moses entering the Promised Land, God makes a promise: "I am sending an angel who shall go before you to guard you and bring you to the place I have prepared for you." This promise speaks of two tasks which the angel has to perform: to guard and to lead: the angel is both Guardian and Guide.
Jesus hints at deeper doctrine about the Guardian Angels: "Do not despise any of these little ones: their angels in heaven constantly behold the face of my heavenly Father" (Mt 18:10). The angels perform their mission because they contemplate God constantly. In their contemplation they understand their mission and receive the wisdom to carry it out according to God's providence.
Angel of God, my Guardian dear, ever this day be at my side to light and guard, to rule and guide.
