Reading the New Testament carefully can be an experience of amazement. We are offered so much in Christ: wisdom, revelation, divine power, and the inheritance of his glory. We should be experiencing more joy and contentment than we do, but so often we live in discouragement, doubt, and a lack of awareness of God's presence. These are the gifts that are given in faith - we need but ask and open our minds and hearts. If our spiritual life is flat and stale we can contemplate the promises of Christ to his followers.
Most of us will not be called upon to face persecution for our faith - at least not violent persecution. In our own time persecution might take the form of ridicule, rejection, or social exclusion. It is very hard to stand out and be different - it takes both faith and courage. It is too easy to deny Christ by our behaviour or by being invisible Christians. We should not let fear stifle the spirit within us. Luke encourages his readers to step up and be bold when challenged about our faith. When we feel the presence of the Spirit moving within us we will have both the necessary courage and the words of wisdom to be a good and inspiring witness to our faith in Jesus Christ. We need not be pushy or loud - just joyful and firm. Often our witness will be more our attitude and behaviour than actual words.
Lord, make me a faithful witness.
