"Where are the meat and potatoes? Or the rice and vegetables?" We want solid food. We desire something we can chew upon and digest. We want something which will fill our bellies. We think we are ready and are perhaps indignant when told we are not ready for more than milk. Look! We already have teeth, gone through that ordeal and are ready to be chomping on something solid! But having teeth does not mean we know when to use them. We still may need to learn when to snap, when to chew and when to bite. Jealously and rivalry still influence us! We are perhaps still too focused on ourselves as though we were the centre, as though we could boast of having accomplished something or caused the growth.

When we can embrace the reality that we are stewards, not the owner, then perhaps we can accept that we each have different tasks, all important to do. Some of us will sow and others will water. Both are important tasks, but it is God who provides the growth, who brings what we do to fruition.

Perhaps with a little more humility we can recognize God working in our lives and respond in gratitude by seeking to be of service to others, as Peter's mother-in-law did. Perhaps we will be able to allow Jesus to lead us rather than seeking to guide Him. Perhaps then we'll be ready for milk toast and pureed food and eventually something more solid, like the Gospel.

Dearest Lord, teach me to serve You without counting the cost.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
