If we really believe that Jesus became a human being like us in all things except for sin, we must believe that he had to discover his vocation, just as we have to. Luke 4 and this passage from Matthew both let us see quite clearly that Jesus found his vocation in the book of the Prophet Isaiah, specifically in the passages where Isaiah speaks about a suffering servant. In the synagogue at Nazareth Jesus proclaimed that the prophecy in Isaiah 61 referred to himself.
In reply to John the Baptist's disciples, Jesus referred to the miracles which Isaiah hoped to see, significantly adding one of his own: the healing of lepers, for that was a significant part of his healing ministry. In the time of Jesus, some rabbis affirmed that healing a leper was equivalent to raising him to life. Jesus' healing miracles all point to the gift of the resurrection, when God, will finally perfect all creation as Jesus gathers it all up to present it to his Father.
Father in heaven, as we listen to Jesus speaking of his miracles, grant us a more perfect faith that we may take to heart the revelation that Jesus truly is for all of us the One who is to come and that we need look for no other Saviour.
