John's letter reveals a painful tension. A community of believers has come into conflict. This disagreement has to do with Jesus' identity. John explains that Jesus, a real physical human being, is the Son of the Father and the Christ. This was not easy for people to accept. John, however, is not afraid to testify to this truth even if it brings conflict.

Today the Church celebrates two Cappadocian Fathers, St Basil the Great and St Gregory of Nazianzus (the third is St Gregory of Nyssa celebrated on March 9). These scholars and priests of the Fourth century also lived in a time of bitter conflict in regard to the faith. Amidst turmoil, they used elements of the prevailing Greek thought to explain that the Father, the Son and the Spirit are equal, distinct as well as one. Gregory, in particular, was known for his talents in public speaking and Basil was known for his care for the poor. Their words, deeds and passion all witnessed to the truth. They witnessed to Christ.

How do I react when others disagree or come into conflict with me in matters of faith? Do I have the courage to speak up or stand up for what is right?

Lord, help me to know You more clearly and to witness to You with my life.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
