People find it very hard to forgive others - especially when they have been victims of great injustice. Joseph had good reason to bear a grudge against his brothers. They had sold him into slavery and reported him dead to their father. But Joseph became a great powerful man, second only to the king, and when he had a chance to get even with his brothers he forgave them instead. After the death of their father, he confirmed this forgiveness and extended great kindness to them. He recognized that somehow everything had been part of God's plan. God had placed him in a position where he could save his entire family. May we be slow to judge, but quick to forgive and to find God in whatever happens to us.
'Disciples are not greater than the master' - Jesus had to remind his followers that if he experienced persecution and death, so would they. There was no easy path or free pass. Even the death of an insignificant sparrow is known to God and matters to Him. How much more does our suffering and even death mean to God? God knows each one of us and we matter infinitely to him. With that in mind, Jesus encouraged his followers to leave fear behind and be bold about proclaiming him before the world. We are loved by God; we needn't fear anything.
Lord, may I find You even in suffering and difficulty.
