On the way to Jerusalem, Jesus talked of his suffering, death, and resurrection and he implied that his followers had to be willing to walk the same path. But they did not understand! They showed by their behaviour that the hearts were not with him. James and John asked Jesus for the special seats at his right and left. Jesus pointed to his suffering again and asked them if they were able to drink from the same cup - they said yes but we are correct in thinking that they replied at bit too quickly and easily. Finally, the Lord insisted that his followers were not to behave like the pagans, lording it over one another and throwing their weight around. True honour and greatness are found only in a willingness to serve humbly, cheerfully, and with love. There is no other way. Christians have often been too quick to forget this part of the Lord's teaching and to focus obsessively on a few favourite issues. Renunciation of power and privilege was very precious for the early Christians because they knew that they were following the Lord's path. We can revitalize our own spiritual life and that of the Church as a whole by regaining a healthy sense of service and humility - each day presents us with countless opportunities if we keep our minds and hearts open and attentive.

Lord, grant me a humble and generous heart.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
