The author of Wisdom, as did Paul in a similar way at a later date in his Letter to the Romans, wonders why human beings cannot come from a knowledge and admiration of the marvels of creation to a knowledge of the Creator and Lord of all things.

With fine insight, the author of Wisdom remarks that human people search busily among God's works but are distracted by what they see, because the things seen are fair.

All things on the face of the earth can help us to attain the purpose for which we were created. This teaching is not a merely human optimism but a profound, liberating and consoling understanding of God's goodness in creating the world around us. So, in the latter years of his life, when in Rome, Ignatius loved to gaze at the heavens in order to help him come closer to God. Another Jesuit, the English poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins, once wrote how he loved to gaze at bluebells, for in those little flowers he could see the beauty of Our Lord.
