The people in Nazareth, Jesus' "native place", were astonished at the wisdom of his teaching and his miraculous powers. Jesus experienced such admiration on several occasions and took the opportunity to point out gently that wonder and amazement were not the same as faith: "So you will not believe unless you see signs and wonders" (Jn 4:48). Yet he was not rigid in imposing the distinction between amazement and faith. On one occasion in the Temple, he got into conversation with some people and told them that he was doing his Father's work and so, even if they did not believe in him, "at least believe in the work I do" (John 10:38). Many things can help us to believe or to come to a deeper faith, as long as we are clear that the focus of our faith is not the things, not the signs and wonders, but only God, and God in Christ.
On another occasion Jesus had cured a man and then instructed him: "Go home and tell all that God has done for you", thus teaching us how to understand what happens in our lives and how we are to find God in all things.
Father in heaven, deepen our faith that we may discover Your presence and see Your work in all the things that occur in our life.
