When we read the story of Israel and Judah after they arrive in the Promised Land, we realize how frail is the human will and how short the human memory. They forgot how God had delivered them from Egypt. They forgot how Moses had condemned idolatry and the worship of other gods. Influenced by neighbouring nations, they asked for a king to rule over them, when they should have known that God alone was their King. Yet God still made room for their mistakes, still accepted them as his children and his people.
We also read that the Babylonian exile was interpreted by Israel and Judah as punishment for their transgressions. However, as in today's first reading, we find that God did not lose hope in his people. He sent them prophets like Jeremiah, to remind them that their God was, in his own person, steadfast in love and faithfulness.
God of Israel, you are our God too. Bless us with an experience of Your steadfast love and faithfulness.
