We have an inner sense that tells us when we are on the right path. Isaiah refers to the 'smooth path of the righteous.' This does not mean that it is easy or without struggles, only that we will make progress and advance when we are doing what is right. He assures us that our yearning for God is a good beacon and guide for us to follow. God will even raise the dead and give them life - so there is nothing that can overcome us. This is truly a cause for rejoicing and the prophet invites us to do just that.
In what sense is the yoke of Jesus easy? It is not a free pass to an easy life free from pain or struggle, but an assurance that we will always have the companionship and help that we need. The yoke kept animals ploughing in a straight line and prevented them from wandering away. With more than one animal, they shared the burden and made the hard work easier. The yoke of Jesus is not a burden imposed on us, but a way in which he walks beside us and shares our burden. It keeps us moving in a straight line, and when we weaken, Jesus takes up the slack so that we do not fall behind. When we feel discouraged, let us remember that we do not labour alone.
Lord, help me with my burdens.
