"Act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God." Thus Micah offers a response to a question that occurs in various forms throughout the Bible and can still be relevant in many situations in our day, namely the question of the relationship between religion and one's activity within society and for the good of society. Micah expresses this problem within the parameters of the religious practice of his time: "Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriad streams of oil?" Will that be enough to fulfil one's obligations to God? The Book of Leviticus had already answered this question: "You shall love your neighbour": it is not sufficient to love God and to worship God with sacrifices. Religion must foster care and concern for people. Jesus repeated this obligation to love others as the fulfilment of the law and the prophets (Mark 12:28-31; Matthew 22:37-40). Micah reminds his people that the principle regulating religion and care for society has already been given: "You have been told what is good", therefore questions concerning this matter are otiose. He gives his own formulation, one which merits much reflection and prayer: "Act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God."

Lord grant us the grace always to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with You, our God.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
