God often works in spite of human actions and always for our benefit. The authorities crucified Jesus because they did not understand him and they were afraid of the change he would bring. But God raised him from the dead - humans cannot block God's will for long. What began in tragedy and sin ended in the good news of salvation being offered to all. Let us not strike out at what we do not understand or seek to undo and suppress what we fear. We might find ourselves fighting against God! If we allow it, God will even raise up good things from the chaos and pain of our own lives.
The disciples were fearful and grief-stricken because Jesus was leaving them. He reassured them, as he reassures us, by telling them not to allow their hearts to be troubled. For those who believe in Jesus there is no reason to fear. In God's house there are many dwelling places - more than enough room for all - and Jesus will take us there. If we feel as if we are lost, Jesus pointed out that he is the way - the path - and all we have to do is follow. He is also truth itself, which we need in a world of so many claims to truth.
Finally, it is he who gives life to us. We do not have to wait until we die for these gifts, they are ours for the asking now. We are never lost; we are never alone; we need never give in to fear and anxiety.
Lord, give my heart peace.
