The Gospels are meant for all ages, so then, when we read today's Gospel, which seems to have very little relevance to our Christian lives, we must pause for a moment and reflect.

The Gospel always challenges us to humility, for Jesus, Son of God came on earth to bring God's love and light and truth to us for our salvation. Since God is always greater, there is much that we do not understand and so it is easy for us to see problems where, obviously, no problems could exist for God. Even worse, it is easy to concoct problems, like the Sadducees with their highly unlikely story of seven brothers and one wife.

From our own perspective, one answer to people like these Sadducees, people who concoct specious objections to Christianity or Catholicism, could be that there are so many millions of people here in Asia who have not yet heard the Gospel that we should not waste time on such theoretical or trick questions. In Mark's version of this story, Jesus concludes rather bluntly telling the Sadducees: "You are very much mistaken". Adherence to Jesus' truth will take us, in humility, to a peace of mind and heart far beyond the confusion and cynicism of such foolishness.
